A video being circulated on the official twitter handle of the Ministry of Information has the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia comparing the ruling Government’s fight against COVID-19 to that of the past Government’s response to ‘dumsor’.

The video was captioned “Two major crises have befallen our country in the last decade – Dumsor and Covid-19. The management of the economy under two different leaders during these crises periods is something we should all be interested in”.

The caption did not sit well with only political actors but the ordinary Ghanaian as well.

Founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga who was obviously not pleased with the Vice President’s statement has also voiced out his displeasure on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show on Happy98.9FM.

He has described the Vice President as, “To have shot himself in the foot. I think Dr. Bawumia is not a serious economist. Maybe he did chew and poor otherwise his understanding of economy is very low and it is as if, someone writes everything he says in public for him”.

According to the accountant, not even a class one economics pupil will draw a comparison between an internal and external problem. “That is what the Vice President is doing”, he said.

The Politician explained that when a country is faced with internal problems, no one will come to your aid because everyone expects you to deal with the situation on your own, and that ‘dusmor’ was a typical internal problem.

But with external and global problems, the entire world will pitch in to support and that is what is currently going on amidst COVID-19. “The whole world is supporting nations with money and resources to fight COVID-19. Some Ghanaians even gave out food to the less privileged and donated to the national COVID-19 fund to support the fight”, he said.

He noted that with the various support being received by the government from the International Monetary Fund and other international bodies, it would be unfair to compare the fight of COVID-19 with the dumsor situation under the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Hassan Ayariga advised the Vice President to keep quiet and say nothing if he does not have anything to tell the populace.
