President elect of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing Kwabena Bempong has applauded the ruling government for its feat in building road infrastructure in the country.
In as much the work of the government is commendable, Ing Kwabena Bempong argues the government must first of all look at maintaining already built roads as opposed to starting new ones.
“The government is doing amazing when it comes to the construction of new roads. In the past 2 or 3 years, the gov’t has declared the year of roads and you can see the work going on. But just as the roads are being constructed, then some are also getting destroyed,” he stated.
He likened the country’s infrastructural deficit as filling the sea with water, and urged the country to make maintenance of roads its number one priority.
In the Happy Development Dialogue series on the topic; ‘Improving Ghana’s Road Infrastructure through sustained innovative technical and financial engineering’ hosted by Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah, the engineer said, “Although all these roads are being constructed, we do not maintain our roads. Sometimes we even wait for the roads to become irreparable before doing anything about them. There are sometimes when you see a crack on the road you have to fix it before it develops into a pothole and before that pothole develops into a manhole. Our maintenance culture is a problem.”
Advising the government on ways to improve the country’s traffic situation and properly manage roads, he charged them to try and move people from their cars into buses. “We need to know that the traffic situation will grow no matter how dualized our roads are. If you make a three lane road today, the traffic will grow and the cars cannot be contained on the road. The traffic situation can only be reduced if the busing system is made effective.”
