Ghana’s thought leading radio station, Happy98.9FM, has donated items amounting to thousands of cedis to the Ghana Prisons Service.

Bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, tin tomatoes and fish were amongst the many items donated to the Prisons Service.

The donation forms part of the station’s efforts to share love with prisoners this festive season, and also to help reduce the pressure and resource limitations suffered by the reformation service.

Presenting the items, Programs Manager of Happy98.9FM, Elwoode Mantey, said “Christmas is a season of giving and showing love. It’s of this reason we thought it wise to celebrate this season with the Ghana Prisons Service and our incarcerated brothers and sisters. We hope this mark the beginning of a fruitful relationship between us and the prison service where we can support them whenever we are called upon.”

Receiving the items on behalf of the Ghana Prisons Service, ACP Opoku (Full Name), thanked Happy98.9FM for the kind gesture. “We appreciate your efforts in trying to celebrate this season with the inmates. We hope that other media houses will follow your footsteps and do as you have done not only during festive seasons like this. Thank you very much and God bless you all,” he said.

ACP Opoku further called on general public and other corporate institutions to help with upcoming projects by the Prison Service. “We are currently working on our library project which is still in the pipeline but has come to a halt due to lack of funds and resources. We use this opportunity to entreat the general public and media houses like yourself to come together and help us achieve this goal.”

Sharing some of the challenges facing the service, ACP Opoku disclosed that, the prisoner to cell ratio had risen with few cells accommodating many prisoners, and hoped charitable organizations and philanthropic groups and individuals will help them construct more cells blocks.

ACP Opoku emphasized that, the prison will also need help fixing their washroom which is in a deplorable state.
