Professor Emeritus of the Ashesi University, Stephen Adei says teachers must be ready to forgo 50% of their salaries if they want to continue staying at home.
The outbreak of Covid-19 in Ghana has resulted in the closure of schools to curb the spread of the disease and teachers have been at home since March.

The Educationist stated that aside from the teachers writing a letter to protest the imminent reopening of schools, they should have made some positive contributions on how to protect teachers and students and a reduction in their salaries.
But speaking on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show with Kwame Afrifa-Mensah, founder and leader of United Front Party (UFP), Dr. Nana Agyenim Boateng described how disappointed he is in Prof. Adei. According to him, the teachers should come together to boycott class as a result of the comments passed.

“I’m highly disappointed in Prof Adei. He has positioned himself in such a way that when one party is in power he will criticizes them even when they are doing something good. He is not serious. I called on all the teachers to boycott class when school re-open for him alone to go and teach the students.”
He added that “Look at the number of schools JM built when he was in power but still this man criticized him for doing little in the educational sector. Is he part of the men the NPP in opposition was bragging about? He quizzes.
However, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has described as offensive, constant attacks on Teachers in the country by Professor Adei.

According to the teachers, it is no fault of theirs that they remain home and should not be punished for something they have no control over.

“Knowing Professor Adei for who he is, we deem his call for the 50% reduction of salaries of teachers as an attempt to instigate the greater society against teachers and cause disaffection for them, but then, it won’t wash! Teachers are not the cause of the Coronavirus and all the challenges it has brought in its trail; like all other segments of society, teachers are victims of circumstances, and must not be punished by a phenomenon they did not originate, as the garrulous Professor seeks to do,” GNAT said in a statement.
