National Security operatives have, in recent weeks, apprehended several Chinese nationals who are now being deported at the Kotoka International Airport to their country of origin following a nationwide crackdown authorized by President John Dramani Mahama.
The most recent arrests took place earlier this week along the Pra River near Supom-Dunkwa in the Shama District of the Western Region, where the individuals were suspected of engaging in illegal mining.
According to National Security operative Hashem Tankonu, the suspects were operating under the guise of sand winning, a cover that was eventually compromised.
About a week ago, another operation led to the arrest of two Chinese nationals and the seizure of 15 excavators.
The deportation of these Chinese nationals marks a step forward in the government’s fight against illegal mining and the destruction of water bodies and forest reserves.
