Government allocates GH₵80m to WAEC for BECE- Annoh Dompreh

President Akufo-Addo names Annoh-Dompreh as Road Fund Management Board Chairman

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh announced to Parliament on Friday June 21, that the Finance Ministry has disbursed GH¢80 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for the successful conduct of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). This funding aims to ensure a smooth and hitch-free examination process for candidates.

This development follows concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, who drew attention to the government’s outstanding debt to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) during a parliamentary session, prompting the release of funds to settle the obligation.

The upcoming BECE will take place from July 8 to July 15, 2024, across all examination centers nationwide.

Earlier, John Kapi, the Head of Public Relations at WAEC, voiced concerns in an interview that the timely conduct of the BECE examination, scheduled for July 8-15, 2024, was under threat if the necessary funds were not disbursed promptly, emphasizing the urgent need for financial support to ensure a smooth examination process.

Frank Annoh-Dompreh revealed that he had personally followed up on the matter and received assurance from the Minister of State, Abena Osei Asare, confirming the release of GH₵80 million to WAEC, thereby addressing the earlier concerns about the examination’s viability.
