Assembly Members in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have called for the elevation of their District to Municipal status.
According to them, the Ministry of Local Government released a list of 13 selected District Assemblies to be elevated to municipal status based on representatives from the ministry’s assessment of the districts but theyrealized that Gomoa East District wasn’t part.
Addressing Journalists at a press conference, the Presiding Member of Gomoa East District Assembly and Assembly member for Ojobi-Akotsi electoral area, Geoffrey Payin Inkuum expressed their disappointment in the ministry of Local.
He noted that, out of the 261 Municipal and District Assemblies in Ghana, the Gomoa East District is the 9th most populated district in Ghana.
” Per 2021 population census, Gomoa East District population was more than 309,000 which is even more than the population of some municipal assemblies. If the population of our district qualifies to be elevated to municipal level, the Government through the Local Ministry must do the needful as the law stipulates”.
