The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly condemned the brutal assault on three journalists in the Western Region.
He described it as a barbaric attack on press freedom.
Addressing the media on Thursday, March 13, he expressed deep concern over the growing trend of violence against journalists, particularly those covering illegal small-scale mining activities.
According to him, such attacks pose a serious threat to press freedom and must not be tolerated.
He said the journalists were covering the devastating impact of illegal mining on local forests when they were physically attacked, sustaining severe injuries and their equipment destroyed in the process.
He stressed that this attack was not an isolated incident but part of a worrying pattern of violence against media personnel.
According to him, one suspect had been arrested and was facing legal action.
Additionally, he revealed that some money had been lodged with the police to compensate the victims for their damaged equipment.
However he urged that the funds should be given directly to the affected journalists to enable them replace their equipment and continue their work without further hardship.
He emphasized that the GJA is demanding swift justice and immediate action to ensure the safety of journalists.
