GJA demands justice for Journalist remanded without fair trial

The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association are seeking justice for ‘Odiasempa’- an Akwatia-based journalist who was arrested and put behind bars for two days and subsequently remanded by a court without any legal representation-.

Odiasempa, was allegedly arrested in a ‘Rambo style’ after he did a story that exposed some alleged misconducts of the Akwatia district Police commander.

‘’The police has indicated not to be in the position to tell us what really transpired except to say that the case has gone beyond them and that it was still being investigated by the Crime Unit. However, our investigations indicate that Odiasempa was charged for Impersonation and defamation for which he
was hurriedly processed for court without a legal representation and was subsequently remanded by the court.’’ The statement said

In the statement, the GJA also appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the activities of the entire police hierarchy in Akwatia, especially the allegations of extortion and corruption against DSP Yaw Agyekum Dankwa.

However, the GJA Eastern Regional branch acknowledged the mutually beneficial relationship that has existed between the Eastern media and the Ghana Police Service at all levels.
