GHS confirms new MPOX case in Greater Accra Region

Ghana has recorded a new MPOX case in the Greater Accra Region, bringing the recent total to three.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) announced the update, reassuring the public that effective measures are in place to monitor and contain the outbreak.

Dr. Dennis Laryea, Deputy Director of Public Health for Disease Surveillance at GHS, confirmed that the latest case was identified last week.

“There was one case confirmed in the Greater Accra Region. The region has conducted investigations, and so far, no new cases have been identified, even among the contacts. However, we are continuing to monitor for any symptoms. I don’t have the exact number of contacts offhand, but the case was confirmed last week,” he said.

Health authorities are monitoring contacts of the confirmed case to prevent further transmission of the virus.

Ghana recorded its first MPOX case in August in the Western Region, identifying 25 contacts. Shortly thereafter, the patient’s mother tested positive, bringing the total number of cases to two as of October 31.
