GHS and GES begin nationwide deworming exercise for children above 5 years

The Ghana Health Service in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service is set to begin a deworming exercise today, Monday October 28 to boost the immunity of children.

The deworming exercise is set to target about 2.6 million children in 100 districts between the ages of five (5) and fourteen (14).

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, announced that the exercise is part of the National School and Community Exercise aimed at boosting the health and immunity of school age children.

According to him, the deworming medicines were donated by the World Health Organization.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye highlighted the importance of deworming as its key to child health.

“Preferably, medicines should be administered immediately after the first break or after children have been served food to ensure all children have eaten. Therefore, all parents, guardians and caregivers should ensure their children eat before going to school,”

The Director of the School Health Education Programme of the GES, Theresa Oppong-Mensah, urged parents to ensure their wards eat well before they are dewormed.

She also assured the Ghana Health Service of the directorate’s preparedness in the exercise.

She added that, “Parents have also been educated on it and they are also going to support us with water and food as well. This is to indicate that GES is ready, and we are fully in support of this exercise”.
