Ghana's Golden Arms ready for 2023 World combat games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

The National Armwrestling Team, known as the Golden Arms, is gearing up to represent Ghana at the prestigious 2023 World Combat Games, currently underway in Riyadh. This global sporting event, which runs from October 24 to October 28, 2023, promises fierce competition and showcases the strength and skill of Ghana’s armwrestling talents.

Ghana’s Golden Arms delegation consists of two formidable female pullers, namely Grace Mintah, the team captain and a dedicated police officer, competing in the Women’s 80kg category, and Mariam Kadri Moro, who will be showcasing her prowess in the Women’s +80kg category. These athletes earned their spots through their exceptional performances at the recent Africa Championship held in Accra. Guiding and coaching this talented duo is Husseini Akuetteh Addy, the Technical Director and Head Referee for Africa, who has assumed the role of coach for the African contingent.

Leading the delegation is DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, a respected board member of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) and chairperson of Greater Accra Armwrestling. Joining her as the team’s chaperone is Sedinam Gbeve Esq. Their mission extends beyond competition, as they plan to engage with industry stakeholders in anticipation of Ghana hosting the 2024 World Armwrestling Championship.

Ghana’s Golden Arms will take the stage in the Combat Games Armwrestling competition on Friday and Saturday, vying for top honors. Notably, President Charles Osei Asibey has been appointed the team leader for Africa, representing not only Ghana but also athletes from Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, Mali, and Egypt.

The 2023 World Combat Games in Riyadh serves as a global hub for combat sports, spanning ten days of intense competition. It symbolizes the perfect union of elite sport and local community involvement. The event’s overarching concept focuses on creating a compact and manageable sports spectacle that allows host cities to promote themselves internationally, engage with their youth, and champion public health and wellness initiatives, thereby inspiring wider participation in combat sports.
