Report by the Transparency International–Defence and Security (TI-DS), has scored Ghana’s defence sector E in the latest report dubbed ‘2020 Government Defence Integrity Index’.
According to the report, there is a high risk of corruption in the defence sector of Ghana revealing that Ghana’s defence sector lacks transparency and accountability.
The project manager of Transparency International, Camilla Zullani, speaking at the lunched of the Report in Accra said: “there is a high level of secrecy and opacity within the Ghanaian defence institutions, with the sector often utilising national security exemptions to bypass transparency requirements.”
She added that “lack of publicly available defence policy or security strategy is one the main reasons making the sector standing a high risk of corruption. There must be enforcement of the legal framework which is on paper, it can help to eradicate this perception on the sector.”
Zullani speaking to Happy FM’s Joseph Nii Ankrah after the launch revealed that “This report is not to undermine Ghana’s defence sector, Mali’s defence sector has also undergone a comprehensive health check in new research from TI-DS, which stresses the need for urgent action to tackle corruption in order to enable the military to better respond to Mali’s numerous security threats.”
