The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced its decision to begin spilling excess water from the Weija Dam due to rising water levels caused by recent rains.
In a notice issued on April 7, 2025, GWCL stated that failing to release the surplus water could lead to the collapse of the dam, posing a serious risk to lives and property.
Although the company has not provided a specific date for the commencement of the spillage, it noted that the process would begin at a low rate to reduce the impact on downstream communities. The volume of water released will be adjusted based on the inflow into the dam.
GWCL assured the public that the spillage would continue as long as water levels keep increasing and expressed apologies for any inconvenience this necessary safety measure might cause.
