Ghana Railway Company Ltd (GRCL) has announced the suspension of its much publicised ‘free ride’ for the public which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, January 8 to Saturday, January 19 on the Accra-Tema rail line.
The suspension which is expected last two weeks according to a statement issued by the company Monday, January 7, is a result of some observed encroachment of the rail line at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Avenor and Achimota.
These observations were made after the management of GRCL together with the ministers for Railways Development and Information inspected the line on Friday January 4, the statement explained.
“The encroachers ostensibly returned to the lines when GRCL workers went on Christmas break. Whilst dealing with the encroachers to make the lines safe, Management of GRCL has taken insurance cover for all passengers who patronize the trains and also putting in place mechanisms to ensure maximum passenger safety and comfort”, the statement added.
The company says it regrets any inconvenience the suspension may have caused the public.
