Ghana is no more a football superpower – Mikki Osei Berko

Ghanaian actor and renowned comedian, Mikki Osei Berko has tasked Ghana’s football body to address the core issues of the National team. He believes the poor management of fundamental football in the country is the root cause of the downgrade in performance over the last couple of years.

Dada Boat opined, the Black Stars’ recent performance at the AFCON tournament is the exact reflection of the current state of the country’s football.

Speaking during an interview on Happy98.9 FM’s Happy Sports Show, he told Ohene Bampoe Brenya, “The national team is just a fruit of the local football. After we’ve gathered everything in our football and well arrange them, they bear fruits. Now what is our root, our stem and the branches before we start thinking about the fruit? These are the questions we need to constantly ask ourselves now.”

Mikki believes the national team can no more be regarded as an elite team on the African continent. Considering the current situation of the team, he thinks investing in them for the World Cup tournament would be unfair to the Ghanaian tax payer and undeserving of the team.

“The Black Stars is the epitome and showcase for the nation’s football, and the way and manner in which we’ve managed it. If you think about the fruit first before considering where to plant, you will fail. This is basic and so simple. I wonder why we have not found this as extrusive and are always going around the same thing. We have to accept that Ghana is no more the superpower football nation of Africa like it was years back.

It is even funny for the country to spend lots of money on a national team in this shape to go to the World Cup and waste money. This is because we have not adequately shaped the football in the country for the Black Stars to come and make a showcase of it,” he added.

He further revealed he has earned the UEFA coaching license and doubts the kind of football we play is befitting. “I’m a football coach with UEFA license B and a member of the English Coaches Association. What is Ghana’s style of play? We need to adopt what would be suit the current crop of players. We can’t accept any style of play anymore, we need to know what we do,” he said.
