Ghana’s Council of State elections will take place today, February 11, with 155 candidates from all 16 regions vying for positions in the esteemed advisory body.
The elections will determine regional representatives who will provide counsel to President John Dramani Mahama on key national issues.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC), the contest features 145 male candidates and 10 female candidates, reflecting a significant gender gap. While female participation remains low, their presence signals progress in efforts to enhance women’s representation in governance.
To qualify for the election, candidates had to meet specific EC requirements, including proof of Ghanaian citizenship, a clean social standing, and the completion of all administrative procedures before the nomination deadline.
Unlike general elections, the Council of State selection follows an Electoral College system. Representatives from Ghana’s 261 District Assemblies each nominate two electors, who then vote to select the final members. These electors assess candidates based on experience, competence, and ability to contribute to national governance.
Established under Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State plays a crucial role in shaping national policy by offering expert advice on governance, security, economic development, and state affairs.
