International Diplomatic Consultant, Farouk Al-Wahab, has advised President Akufo-Addo to focus on resolving Ghana’s economic crisis rather than meddling in the affairs of Russia and Ukraine.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo’s comments at the 77th UN General Assembly was in poor state and a diplomatic blunder.
“Ghana has no business taking about the Russia Ukraine war. How can the President go and make a speech against the people of Russia? We should focus on our bad and dying economy instead of talking about the Russia-Ukraine war,” he told Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show.
President Akufo-Addo has lamented the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on African economies, especially at a time the continent was finding its feet after the huge impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the 77th UN General Assembly, portions of the President’s speech read, “As we grappled with these economic challenges, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine burst upon us, aggravating an already difficult situation. It is not just the dismay that we feel at seeing such deliberate devastation of cities and towns in Europe in the year 2022, we are feeling this war directly in our lives in Africa.
“Every bullet, every bomb, every shell that hits a target in Ukraine, hits our pockets and our economies in Africa.” According to the diplomatic consultant, the speech of the President can be interpreted as bombs and bullets from Ukraine enriches the pockets and economies in Africa, a statement which is problematic.
“That is why after his speech the only people who clapped for the President were the Ghanaian delegation. The others understood the gravity of his comments,” he revealed.
With Russia being a respecter of agreements, he expressed confidence Ghanaian students will not be expelled from Russia following the President’s comments.
