Ghana fails to retain WAFU Cup after losing to Senegal on penalties

Ghana’s Black Stars B failed to retain their WAFU title as they lost to host nation Senegal in the finals played on Sunday at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies.

The game ended 1-1 after regulation time with the title decider going through the penalty shoot-out.

It was a game of both halves as each side saw their effort hit the woodwork denying them the opening goal in regulation time.

Senegal broke the deadlock after 108 minutes through Youssouph Badji after he connected a cross from the right wing into the box.

Hearts of Oak striker Joseph Esso smashed home on a half-volley from inside the box to send the tense finale to the penalty shootouts.

Ghana lost the penalties by 3-1 as Augustine Okrah, Justice Blay and Fatawu Mohammed failed to convert their kicks.

In the shootout Senegal keeper Ndiaye made two saves to deny Okrah and Justice Blay while Ghana’s Fatawu Mohammed struck the crossbar to see the Lions of Teranga win on penalties.
