Head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, Chris Hughton, has addressed the inclusion of Captain Andre Ayew, despite his current lack of club affiliation.

Hughton, who unveiled a 25-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Central African Republic (CAR) on September 7, included Black Stars captain Dede Ayew, a decision that has received massive scrutiny.

In light of this, Hughton explained his decision emphasizing the balance he seeks in his squad selection.

“What I have to do is pick a squad that is made up of young, exciting players and much more experienced players,” Hughton said,

“There will always be, in the general public, a lot of debate about who should be in the squad and who shouldn’t. We are knowledgeable about the number of games that he has played, and we also know what he means to the squad. He is our captain, and I know what he gives the squad,” Hughton added.

With the Black Stars set to host Central African Republic in their final Group E game at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Hughton’s side must avoid defeat if they are to qualify for the next AFCON tournament.
