In recent times, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) have come under hefty pressure over the payment of royalties to their respective members.
Akosua Agyapong, Abrekyireba Kofi Sammy, Shatta Wale among others are some of the musicians who have raised concerns over the payment of the royalties.
In an interview with Doctar Cann on Happy FM’s ‘Showbiz Xtra’, one of Ghana’s finest Rappers Donzy Chaka descended heavily on GHAMRO executives by saying he [Donzy] “sees no sense in joining GHAMRO” and described the organization as a white elephant.
This did not go down well with the chairman of GHAMRO, Rex Omar who was listening to the show. He responded to Donzy via phone interview saying “I was listening to the conversations going on in the studio but it’s sometimes worrisome that most of these young musicians don’t understand how GHAMRO operates.
It’s just the fraction of an artiste income so if you don’t like it or you feel it doesn’t make sense, it’s up to you.”
“What I want to correct is that every artiste that GHAMRO has made payment to is either registered by his manager or himself. In 2015, GHAMRO met the new acts in the industry, we spoke to them, some of them were convinced and came to register. Lots of artistes think the money they are getting is small but if you like just save it for about ten to twenty years and see the benefit you will get,” Rex Omar added.
Donzy Chaka also responded to Rex Omar comments and said he only respect leaders who are truthful and that Rex Omar is not speaking the truth “Doctar you know I am a very conscious person but if you are a leader and you are not truthful, I will not respect you. Let us just be real, if you are elected into any position, just do what you were brought to do.”
Donzy is currently promoting his new single dubbed ‘ You and the devil’.
