Seven illegal miners at Nyamedeso in the Akontombra District of the Western Region have been arrested through the collaborative efforts of the Member of Parliament for Sewhi Akontombra, Pious Kwame Nkuah and the Ghana Police Service.
Out of the seven illegal miners, six are male.
The Police retrieved suspected marijuana, lighters, Chanfang machines, water pumping equipment and ammunition during the arrest.
The suspects are currently in police custody at the Western North Regional Police Command in Sewhi Wiaso, assisting with investigations.
According to the MP, several warnings had been issued to the miners to leave the site prior to their arrests.
The legislature noted with concern that the activities of illegal miners had destroyed the only stream that serves as a main source of water for the community and its environs.
He reaffirmed his commitment to combating illegal mining activities in his constituency.
He also expressed concern over the Ghana Education Service in the District, threatening to close down schools if authorities do not find other alternatives to provide safe drinking water for the people.
He promised to find a lasting solution to the water issues confronting the community due to illegal mining activities.
