Four individuals have been arrested for engaging in illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, within the Tano-Anwia Forest Reserve in the Aowin Municipality. They include two Chinese nationals and two Ghanaians.
The arrests occurred during a collaborative operation conducted by the Forestry Commission’s Rapid Response Team and the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, March 20.
The operation was carried out through investigative reports by journalists which uncovered ongoing mining activities in protected forest reserves despite government efforts to combat galamsey.
During the operation, authorities confiscated two excavators and a pickup truck.
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
