Former CJ Sophia Akuffo disagrees with Akufo-Addo’s claim of a perfect constitution

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has disagreed with former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s assertion that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution is flawless and requires no review.

Speaking in an interview with the media, she advocated for an open-minded approach to constitutional reforms, emphasizing the importance of periodic updates to ensure the Constitution remains relevant to modern challenges.

The former Chief Justice described the review process as essential to constitutional governance, dismissing claims that amendments would undermine its credibility.

She endorsed President John Mahama’s recent call to revisit the constitutional review process, which was initiated over a decade ago but remains unfinished.

Sophia Akuffo highlighted that, after more than thirty years of implementing the current Constitution, certain provisions have become inadequate or outdated and require reconsideration.
