The Orlando police have recovered two pairs of Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings valued at a total of $769,500 (£597,000) after a suspect allegedly swallowed them over two weeks ago.
Jaythan Gilder, 32, ingested the earrings around the time of his arrest on February 26, according to police. Detectives monitored him at an Orlando hospital for more than a dozen days until the jewelry was expelled.
Gilder faces charges of robbery with a mask and first-degree grand theft.
Police say he posed as an assistant to an NBA player to gain access to a VIP room at a Tiffany & Co. store in Orlando, where he was shown high-end jewelry. He allegedly distracted employees before fleeing with two pairs of earrings, dropping a diamond ring worth $587,000 in the process.
When officers apprehended him later that day, they witnessed him swallowing several objects believed to be the stolen earrings. Tiffany & Co. has since cleaned the recovered jewelry.
