Following one week of continuous rain which affected those along the White Volta and sparing those closer to the Burkina Faso border, severe flooding in the Upper East region has led to the deaths of 29 people and seen over 5000 displaced.
Speaking on ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ on Happy FM, Upper East Regional correspondent for Happy FM, Mosses Apobona disclosed that, “after one week of rains, 13 districts out of 15 in the region have been severely affected. Those closer to the Volta River have had the worst of the floods. Figures from NADMO reveals that, 29 people have lost their lives with about 5000 more losing their homes and cultivated farmlands.”
Moses added that, 500 houses have been washed away. Most houses in the rural parts of the region are made out of mud and easily absorb water. The concentrated water in the mud makes these houses heavy, eventually weakening the structures leading to its collapse.
Affected people are seeking refuge in social centers whilst some are also camping in classrooms.
