National President of Inshore Fishermen Association of Ghana, Joseph Nii Armah Quaye has called on government for their share of the national cake by a way of financing the Fisheries sector to provide their required fishing gadgets.
At a stakeholder meeting with fishermen from all the regions to discuss and deliberate on issues of interest in the fishries sector, Mr. Joseph Quaye noted that even though the Ministry is doing its best for the fishermen, it is financially handicapped hence the need for government’s support.
He said is unfortunate that government’s concentration was only on the crop and animal husbandry sector.
“We are calling on government to support the ministry financially to provide us with the required gadgets for effective fishing as it is done in the agricultural sector”.
In a bid to curb the menace of illegal fishing, he also called on government to come up with some new fishing methods or bring equipment to test the fishes.
Acting President of the National Fisheries Association Simon Agah speaking on the closed season said it has been helpful, however the fisher folks think the timing was wrong.
He called for a collective agreement and collaboration between government and the fisher folks in the next season.
The 2004 National Best fisherman in Sekondi Kofi Panyin also pleaded with government to increase the premix fuel and reduce gas oil prices for effective fishing.
