The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has noted that the fisheries sector makes viable contributions to national development.
She said the fisheries and aquaculture sector plays a crucial role in Ghana’s economic development by providing employment, contributing to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and supporting national food security and foreign exchange earnings.
Speaking at the Central Regional edition of the Regional Townhall Meeting and Exhibition on Tuesday, October 15, she noted that with over three million people employed across the sector’s value chain, it is a significant driver of livelihoods and nutrition. In 2023, the sector contributed 1.01% to the country’s GDP.
According to her, the national fish production for the year surpassed 680,000 metric tons, with a per capita fish consumption of 20 kilograms. This figure exceeds the West African regional average of 13 kilograms, underscoring the importance of fish in the Ghanaian society.
She emphasized the need to further enhance the sector’s capacity, stressing that sustainable practices will ensure continued contributions to economic growth and national food security.
