FDA calls for increased support for breastfeeding

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has urged Ghanaians to support mothers and children by promoting and encouraging breastfeeding.

In a statement released on World Breastfeeding Week 2024, dated Saturday, August 10, 2024, the FDA highlighted the numerous health benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers. They emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment to foster breastfeeding practices.

The statement added that breastfeeding provides essential nutrients and antibodies that protect infants from common childhood illnesses, promotes mother-child bonding, and enhances overall well-being.

However it said despite its many advantages, breastfeeding practices continue to encounter obstacles and inequalities, especially in marginalized and underserved communities.

“Inspite of its numerous benefits, breastfeeding practices still face challenges and disparities, particularly in marginalised and undeserved communities. Breastfeeding mothers in diverse spheres of life encounter social, psychological and knowledge challenges,” the statement said

The Authority also expressed gratitude for UNICEF’s support and partnership, acknowledging their joint efforts in creating safe spaces and improving conditions for mothers and children
