Former Ghanaian boxer, Joseph Agbeko has attributed the decline of the sport to what he termed as fake fights.
Joseph Agbeko claimed that the continuous staging of fake fights by boxers is undermining and killing the sport at a fast rate and should be stopped.
He said boxers are made to stage fights in order to get good statistics for promoters outside the country to see them as good fighters when they aren’t.
“We have been building boxers the wrong way. We love giving boxers easy opponents so that they will be able to win fights, but that will not take them anywhere. Give boxers good competition that prepares them for the future.
“That has been the biggest issue. There are a lot of fake fights in the system. I once took a friend from the US to Kwahu to watch a boxing bout. The first two fights on the night were fake fights. It was very obvious, so I became embarrassed,” he stated.
Joseph Agbeko is a two-time former bantamweight world champion, having held the IBF title twice between 2007 and 2011.
