Ellembelle Police accused of illegally releasing Karela United’s Philip Flamini

The Ellembelle District Police has been accused of illegally releasing Karela United winger Philip Flamini, who was remanded by the Ellembelle District Court in the Western Region for defilement earlier this month.

This is according to the Ellembelle District Social Welfare Officer, Jonas Kabutey.

Philip Flamini is alleged to have defiled a 13-year-old girl at the team’s clubhouse on Saturday, April 29 in Edwakpole, a suburb of Aiyinase in the Ellembelle District.

The 24-year-old Ghana Premier League player, who was arraigned on Tuesday, May 2 before the Ellembelle District Court, confirmed he defiled the young girl. He has been in police custody for the past two weeks.

However, three days ago, the winger was granted bail with three sureties by the Nkroful District Court in the Western Region of Ghana.

The court proceedings were overseen by Her Worship Awo Amissah French. Flamini was charged with sexual assault and defiling a 13-year-old schoolgirl.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Happy 98.9FM, the Ellembelle District Social Welfare Officer, Mr Kabutey made wild allegations about the players’ case.

“A case like Philip’s is a high-profile case because it is a case of defilement. The case was referred to the Circuit Court by the Magistrate because it is the Circuit Court which is able to pass the sentence. From Last Tuesday to Thursday, Philip didn’t appear in court meaning in a similar case, the Police will then delay the process and extort money from the culprits and release them. We have written a petition because defilement and rape cases in Ellembelle are rampant. Most are also handled by the Police themselves after extorting money from culprits. There have been over 15 defilement cases which have never been to court and the Divisional Crime officer at Ellembelle is granting bail with the attention of the District Commander himself. This means justice is being tempered with”.

Flamini was scheduled to reappear before the court on Monday, May 15, 2023. Karela United has suspended him pending the conclusion of the ongoing police investigation.

It is currently unclear whether the club will allow Flamini to return to training while investigations continue.
