President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Edward Abambire Bawa, as the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
The appointment was announced in a statement from the Office of the President, dated January 17, 2025. Bawa will lead the GNPC, which is tasked with promoting the exploration, development, and production of petroleum resources to advance Ghana’s economic growth.
The statement cited Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (P.N.D.C.L.64), as the legal basis for the appointment. The Act outlines GNPC’s responsibilities, including petroleum exploration, ensuring a reliable supply of petroleum products, advising the government on petroleum-related matters, and managing the corporation’s financial and operational framework.
“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (P.N.D.C.L.64), has appointed you as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation pending receipt of the required advice of the Honourable Minister for Energy, in consultation with the Public Service Commission,” the statement read.
The statement which was signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama Ph.D indicated that the appointment of Mr. Bawa takes effect on the day as issued. “I take this opportunity to congratulate you formally on your appointment; please accept the President’s best wishes.”
