In a joint statement, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations (UN) have expressed strong condemnation of the recent outbreak of violence in Liberia, which resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals in the Foya District of Lofa County.
The violence erupted due to political clashes between supporters of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the opposition Unity Party (UP) as the nation gears up for its presidential and legislative elections on October 10.
The statement issued by ECOWAS and the UN commended the Liberia National Police (LNP) for their swift action in restoring calm to the region. Furthermore, both organizations urged the LNP to conduct impartial investigations into the incident, make their findings public, and ensure the prosecution of those responsible for the violence.
Highlighting the importance of the Farmington River Declaration 2023, which emphasizes the protection of human rights and adherence to the rule of law, ECOWAS and the UN called upon the leadership of the UP and CDC to play a pivotal role in preventing further provocations and acts of violence among their supporters.
The statement specifically urged the UP and CDC to cooperate fully with the LNP during the ongoing investigations.
ECOWAS and the UN also called upon the media to exercise responsibility in their reporting to prevent any exacerbation of the already volatile situation.
They emphasized the necessity for all stakeholders and the general public to uphold the values of peace, accountability, and respect for the rule of law to ensure the consolidation of peace and security in Liberia during this critical electoral period.
ECOWAS and the UN further extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. The upcoming presidential election in Liberia features incumbent President George Weah, representing the CDC, seeking re-election, and former Vice President Joseph Boakai leading the UP, among a total of 20 presidential candidates. The international community is closely watching the situation in Liberia as the nation prepares for this pivotal election.
