ECOWAS Summit: Bola Tinubu praises Akufo-Addo for peaceful elections; encourages member states to emulate

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has praised Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for ensuring a peaceful election in 2024 and demonstrating a commendable commitment to democracy.

Speaking at the ECOWAS summit held on December 15, 2024, President Tinubu referred to Akufo-Addo as “Mr. Democrat,” recognizing his firm stance on democracy and its role in nation-building. “We have the man I will refer to as Mr. Democrat; I congratulate President Nana Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana for successful elections,” President Tinubu said.

“Thank you for promoting democracy. May God bless you. ECOWAS will continually need your service”, he added after a standing ovation and round of applause given to H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

President Tinubu also acknowledged President Akufo-Addo’s impactful contributions to ECOWAS, including the successful implementation of institutional reforms and his unmatched dedication to the bloc’s smooth operations, evidenced by his consistent attendance at all meetings and summits.

President Tinubu urged ECOWAS member states to emulate Ghana’s democratic achievements by prioritizing peace, national unity, and political stability across the region. “I urge all of us in the region to learn from this good democratic practice and prioritize our countries’ national unity. This manner of peaceful transition firmly roots the culture of democracy not only in West Africa but also across the entire African continent,” he emphasized.
