EC seeks court order to finalize disputed collation process

The Electoral Commission (EC) has called on the High Court to issue directives allowing it to complete the collation of results at disputed centers following parliamentary election controversies in four constituencies.

Legal challenges raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have delayed the process, prompting the EC to seek judicial intervention to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

During the hearing on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, the EC’s counsel Justin Amenuvor emphasized the importance of adhering to Constitutional Instrument (C.I. 127) to ensure proper oversight and prevent unauthorized declarations at collation centers. According to the EC, failure to finalize the collation could set a dangerous precedent, enabling unlawful disruptions during future elections.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) also argued for the completion of the collation, presenting video evidence to support claims of irregularities in the Tema Central Constituency. The video showed an individual, allegedly not authorized by the EC, making a declaration of results. The NPP contended that this act violated established electoral procedures and disenfranchised voters.

Meanwhile, statements from NDC representatives in the video suggested dissatisfaction with the EC’s handling of the process, intensifying the dispute. The High Court is expected to address the matter and determine whether the EC can proceed to finalize and announce the election results in the contested constituencies.
