EC rules out extension of limited voters’ registration deadline

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it cannot extend the deadline for the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.

Although the process faced technical issues in its initial two days, it has since proceeded smoothly and uninterrupted nationwide, according to the Commission.

The voter registration process, which began on May 7, 2024, is set to conclude on May 27, 2024, with the Electoral Commission aiming to wrap up the exercise within the scheduled three-week time frame.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, Deputy EC Chair in Charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, asserted that the 21-day window for the voter registration exercise is sufficient.

He noted that, in contrast to the first week, which saw long queues at some registration centers, the number of applicants has significantly decreased at many centers, with still a week remaining before the scheduled closure of the process.

“We have dispatched mobile teams to remote and inaccessible areas, ensuring that individuals who face challenges reaching district registration centers can still participate. Given these measures, we believe it’s unnecessary and unfeasible for anyone to demand an extension at this point,” Mr. Tettey emphasized.
