The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has announced upcoming by-elections in Nkoranza North and South, as well as several other electoral areas nationwide.
This according to the EC is to fill vacancies primarily caused by the passing of sitting members and unresolved electoral matters.
“In accordance with the District Level Elections Regulations, 2015 (C.I. 89), the Electoral Commission will conduct the Nkoranza North and South District Level Elections on Tuesday, 13th May, 2025. This follows the expiration of the term of the Assembly and Unit Committee Members.
The Commission will also conduct By-elections for vacant Electoral Areas arising as a result of the death or resignation of a member of Assembly Members on the same day, Tuesday, 13th March, 2025,” part of the statement read.
In an official statement, the EC confirmed that these elections will address multiple vacant positions in district assemblies, including those in Awutu Senya West, Agona West, Agona East, Ablekuma Central, La Dade-Kotopon, Weija-Gbawe, Krowor, and many more.
While most vacancies resulted from the deaths of elected assembly members, some areas, such as Loagri Kukua, Wenchiki, Adibo, Bunburiga, and Tigenga, were unable to hold elections previously due to security concerns or electoral violence.
The EC has now assessed these areas and declared them safe for voting.
In Loagri Kukua, located in the West Mamprusi District, the Commission noted a re-run was initially ordered due to over-voting at one polling station but was postponed due to security threats.
Similarly, elections in Kpunduli, Nanton, were halted due to violence but are now set to proceed under improved conditions.
The EC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring full representation for all affected districts and electoral areas. It urged stakeholders to support efforts to maintain peace and security throughout the electoral process.
