Ec announces free Voter ID card replacements for Akosombo Dam Spillage victims

EC to engage political parties on proposed 2024 election date change

Following the National Democratic congress’s appeal, for free voter ID card replacements the Electoral Commission has announced that it will replace voter ID cards lost by victims of the recent Akosombo dam spillage at no cost, ensuring affected citizens can exercise their right to vote.

At a press conference on Thursday, May 16, Mr. Kwetey emphasized the critical need for immediate action, urging the Electoral Commission to respond with urgency and compassion to address the plight of Akosombo dam spillage victims.

In a statement released by the Electoral Commission, it reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring equal access to the democratic process, pledging to support all eligible voters, including those affected by the Akosombo dam spillage, in exercising their right to vote in the upcoming general election.

EC stated” As a well-meaning Commission, it is our duty to support all eligible voters to vote in the upcoming General Election. The replacement of the Voter ID cards which is scheduled to commence from 30th May, 2024, is intended to fulfill that duty. Recognizing the untold hardships and economic loss suffered by victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, we agree with Hon. Fiifi Kwetey of the NDC to support them. In solidarity with the victims and as a gesture of goodwill, the commission is happy to announce that replacement of Voter ID Cards for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage will be free”.
