The MP-elect for Ekumfi Constituency, Dr. Ekow Kwainoe, has identified key developmental challenges facing the area and outlined his vision for addressing them.
With a constituency rich in diversity, home to fishing and farming communities Dr. Kwainoe said he is determined to tackle infrastructure deficits, improve educational opportunities, and create jobs for the youth.
According to him, one of the most pressing issues is the poor state of roads, which continues to hinder the movement of people and goods. He noted that he has already undertaken efforts to reshape a crucial 15-kilometer road, emphasizing the importance of improving infrastructure to support the constituency’s predominantly business-oriented residents. While road construction does not fall directly within the mandate of an MP, he stressed that he is committed to mobilizing resources and collaborating with stakeholders to upgrade critical roads in Ekumfi.
In education, he noted that the constituency faces significant challenges at both the basic and secondary levels. He highlighted the absence of a technical school as a major gap and pledged to work towards establishing one to equip the youth with skills for industrial and entrepreneurial pursuits. He stressed that existing schools like T.I. Ahmadiyya which is doing quite well but there are other schools like the Atta Mills Senior High School which requires a bit of help and require infrastructure upgrades to accommodate more students and alleviate pressure on resources, especially under the Free Senior High School program. Dr. Kwainoe added that he has engaged with relevant authorities to advocate for modern facilities for these schools.
Youth unemployment is another critical challenge Dr. Kwainoe outlined. He noted that many young people are compelled to migrate in search of better opportunities due to the lack of jobs in the area. Drawing from his extensive banking experience, he stressed his commitment to attracting investors to establish businesses in Ekumfi. He also emphasized the need to revitalize the agricultural sector, improving programs like planting for food and jobs while addressing inefficiencies. Additionally, he intends to boost the fishing industry, a vital economic activity for the coastal communities, to enhance productivity and incomes.
