Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed plans to introduce free tertiary education for the children of cocoa farmers if elected.
This initiative he said is designed to replace the Senior High School (SHS) cocoa scholarship scheme, which has become obsolete due to the current Free SHS program.
Speaking to cocoa farmers during the Farmers’ Day celebration on Friday, November 8, at Jocubu, in the Odotobri constituency, Dr. Bawumia explained that the new policy aims to support cocoa farmers directly by removing financial barriers to higher education for their children.
He noted that while COCOBOD previously provided scholarships for cocoa farmers’ children to attend Senior High School, the Free SHS policy has made secondary education accessible to all at no cost.
As a result, the government plans to redirect the funds that were once used for these scholarships to cover tertiary education fees for cocoa farmers’ children, starting next year.
