Ugandan opposition politician Kizza Besigye, who has been on a hunger strike for nearly a week, has been rushed to the hospital following what has been described as a “deterioration” in his health.
Besigye, a well-known political opponent of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, was captured in November last year and has remained behind bars since.
His lawyers claim he was “kidnapped” in neighboring Kenya, where he had traveled, and forcibly transported back to Uganda. He was then charged in the military’s General Court Martial (GCM) with various offenses, including illegal weapons possession.
Besigye’s hunger strike has been described as a protest against his imprisonment.
Local news reports indicate that the 68-year-old politician has been hospitalized in a health facility, which is under “tight security.”
