The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured that the Ghana Police Service attaches utmost importance to the principles of media freedom and the protection of journalists, and does not regard these fundamental rights as a mere formality.

The IGP revealed that the Police Service’s leadership has established good internal disciplinary measures to prevent police officers from harassing or abusing media professionals, ensuring that such behavior is not even contemplated.

Addressing a National Dialogue on Defending Media Freedom at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Thursday, August 29, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police emphasized that the safety of journalists is a personal priority for him, given his own affiliation with the profession.

He emphasized that, as both law enforcement and the media are comprised of human beings, errors can inevitably occur. However, he underscored the importance of acknowledging and taking responsibility for these mistakes, and offering apologies when warranted, to maintain trust and foster a positive working relationship.
