A memorandum from the registrar headquarters of the West African Examinations Council has revealed that the West African Secondary Schools Examination has been rescheduled for a later date due to the deadly Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The registrar has directed that the 2020 WASSCE timetable be suspended and the conduct of 2020 WASSCE will be put on hold till further notice. It further stated that these directives will be reviewed when the health situation improves.
This directive is to was important as “subsequent protocols put in place by governments of member countries to prevent the spread of the disease have serious implications for the conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates,2020”.
Earlier this week, The Teachers Union of Ghana together with the National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and its affiliates at a press conference pleaded with President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to consider the postponement of the upcoming final exams for both the Junior and Senior High Schools.
The association stated that prior to the WASSCE examination, the social distancing protocol will not work between teachers and students as they (teachers) engage with students on a daily basis.
The president ordered a total closure of all public and private educational facilities in the country after the country recorded cases of Coronavirus.
