Contents of a Ghanaian history textbook for basic 4 pupils have generated a huge public uproar.
The book titled “History of Ghana for Basic Schools” was authored by Francis Benjamin Appiah and Henry David Appiah.
A section of the book which touches on religion, specifically Christianity lists some points about the negative effects of Christianity and missionary activities.
Among some of the points listed, is that Christianity has led to an increase in poverty in Ghana.
“Christianity has led to an increase in poverty; there is a direct link between religion and laziness which contributes to poverty in Ghana and Africa as a whole. Religion makes people lackadaisical in their attitude towards finding practical ways to improve their undesirable living conditions,” portions of the textbook read.
The book also adds that religion is a major cause of physical and doctrinal disputes in Ghana.
This has led some education experts to question how such a book could have been approved by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).
