The government of the People’s Republic of China has clarified that the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China is not a new virus, contrary to claims by some health bodies worldwide.
The widespread narrative about the respiratory infection, described as an “unknown virus in China,” has sparked significant concern online.
A report shared by the Chinese Embassy in Ghana, reveals that the spread of influenza virus pathogens are common during the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, causing a number of respiratory infections.
The recent report from the Chinese government noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that respiratory infection levels reported in China are within the normal range and that HMPV is a common virus. Experts also stress that there is no indication of a severe global health threat linked to this virus. “Calling this common virus “unknown” is inconsistent with basic science and essentially fear-mongering.”
Chinese authorities emphasize that HMPV is a well-known virus that has been circulating in humans for over 60 years, often causing upper respiratory infections. “The Chinese government takes seriously the health of its own people and foreign nationals in China. China’s competent authorities and technical agencies took proactive steps to carry out sentinel surveillance for various acute respiratory infectious diseases and released surveillance results. Chinese disease control experts have told the public on multiple occasions how to take science-based protective steps,” authorities stated.
Meanwhile, WHO continues to work closely with Chinese health agencies to monitor and analyze reports of respiratory infections. Chinese authorities also affirm their commitment to maintaining safety measures for both citizens and visitors. “We will continue to do what’s necessary and do our best to make sure it is comfortable, safe, and convenient for both Chinese and foreigners to travel in China. It is also important for everyone to make a common effort for personal and family health,” they added.
