Lawyer for 31 accused persons arrested in the Volta Region in connection with the Friday’s roadblock and violent evasion, Theophilus Donkor says his clients should have been charged with treason if they were really a part of the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF).
According to him, his clients have just been unfortunate. And believes the security agencies know his clients are not guilty but had to arrest people when they visited the region to aid their investigations.
These suspects have been slapped with five charges by state prosecutors at an Accra Circuit court.
The charges relate to conspiracy to commit crime namely to attend a meeting of the prohibited organization, to participate in the campaign of a prohibited organization and rioting with weapons.
“The police know honestly that my clients are not a part of the group, hence this treatment,” he said.
Speaking to Samuel Eshun of the Happy Morning Show, the lawyer indicated that under normal circumstances his clients “should be charged with treason if they truly belonged to the Volta Secessionist group and actively participated in Friday’s incident.”
On his authority, his clients have no means to engage in any activity or support the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) and prays they are vindicated.
He added that his clients were nowhere near the security installations that were attacked and charged security agencies to find the right culprits and prevent mayhem.
“My concern now is that the culprits are roaming freely and I fear the harm they can cause with the AK 47’s they stole from the police armoury.
Members of the Volta Secessionist group blocked major roads in and out of the Volta Region and attacked two police stations ransacking their armoury and getting away with some AK 47’s.
This was done in an attempt to proclaim their sovereignty and demand that the government of Ghana recognize them as an independent state.
