Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently being pressured by Members of Parliament within the ruling Liberal Party to resign as the country’s election nears.
Reports indicate that voters are likely to vote the ruling Liberals out of power in 2025, increasing legislators’ desire for Trudeau to step down and allow another leader to take over.
Voter fatigue and anger over high prices and a housing crisis are seen as key factors that could lead to the Liberals’ defeat in the next election, following more than nine years in office.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, more than 50 Liberal Members of Parliament from Ontario—the most populous province and the party’s stronghold—held a call on Saturday and agreed that Trudeau should step down.
Canada is set to hold its next federal election on October 20, 2025, unless called earlier. The ruling Liberals face the Conservative Party of Canada as their main opposition, with recent polls showing the Conservatives leading in public support.
