International Diplomatic Consultant, Al Wahab Farouk, has hinted at the possible involvement of exiled former President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré in the recent coup d’état in the nation.
In his experience, he argues every exiled ex-president, especially those who were once military leaders still has some influence in the army, giving them instructions that are mostly executed.
“Hatred causes these things especially when a former President living elsewhere is giving instructions to some people who he uses. They want to keep a legacy and that is why every President on the African continent comes and even after the end of their tenure they always want to remain useful,” he stated.
With the Burkina Faso military having been divided for over 30 to 40 years over tribal factions and being anti each other, “the military pot was already heated and was just waiting for explosion” the spark which was ignited by Blaise Compaoré.
According to him, every military leader to have ruled Burkina Faso still has loyal supporters in the highly divided military making it easier for them to influence governance in the French nation.
In an interview with Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show, Al Wahab Farouk stated, “I am not surprised by the timing of the coup and it may escalate. The funny thing is when the heat comes, France will hide in the shadows.”
The army’s removal and detention of Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore after two days of unrest have sparked some celebration among anti-government protesters, and international concern after what was the fourth military coup in West and Central Africa in the past year.
Late on Monday, a group of soldiers calling themselves the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration, led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba appeared on state television to declare that they were in control of the county. The government and national assembly were dissolved and the constitution suspended, they said, as they also announced an overnight curfew.
The coup comes amid an increasingly bloody Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced millions across the Sahel region.
