Bukom Kenkey sellers have disclosed that Kenkey sold beyond 5 Ghana cedis is procured from their community at a lower cost, indicating a decision by other sellers to increase profits.

This revelation comes amidst a pricing surge for the Ga staple, observed since mid-2023 and continuing into 2024.

The traders conveyed this information during an interview on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben Happy On Wheels edition.

Rhoda Otoo, a prominent Kenkey seller in the community, noted that many vendors from across Accra source their Kenkey from Bukom at wholesale rates, subsequently retailing it at a higher price. “This is where we make the Kenkey; a lot of people come to buy from us and sell it at a higher cost.”

She added that despite the slim profit margins in this line of business, they are able to sustain themselves. “When they come, they buy 200 cedis worth of Kenkey for 100 cedis; in as much as we do not profit much at least we have our daily bread.”
