Brogya Gyamfi defends Sammy Gyamfi’s George Floyd-EC Cartoon

The National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has been heavily criticized for posting a photo in protest to the compilation of the new voters’ register.

The photo, which he posted on Twitter, made reference to the murder of the African-American man, George Floyd, in the United States of America. The photo depicts the Electoral Commission (EC) choking a handcuffed man with the new voters’ register with the President kneeling on the man as well.

Even though many people have expressed their displeasure and have asked the politician to take down the photo, Sammy Gyamfi insists on keeping the photo on social media.

Supporting Sammy Gyamfi on the issue, Ashanti Regional Organizer of the NDC, Yaw Brogya Gyamfi has said that there is nothing wrong with the photo and that it is left to the viewer to interpret the photo as he or she wishes.

He made these comments in an interview with Kwame Afrifa Mensah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show.

“The cartoon is depicting the importance of our right to vote. So if someone wants to infringe on that right, by disenfranchising people, that is what the picture is showing. The cartoon is depicting that what the EC is doing will bring danger. The EC must listen. There is nothing sensitive about that cartoon”, he said.

He added that some people who are criticizing Sammy Gyamfi are doing so out of hypocrisy. He noted that since he did not see anything wrong with the photo, he shared it on his social media page and he was even ready to share the photo again.
